The other day, my student opened her pencil case and I took a look inside as she normally has some cute pencils and erasers etc. I was quite surprised to find a box cutter in it! I asked her about it and she said her teacher told her to bring it to school.
Now, I'm guessing that this is not ok in North America as it can clearly be used as a weapon. Am I right?

really, this would be a problem in the US? the cutters are used in schools for crafts project all over Europe, too. I think we already used them in elementary school.
I'm sure it would be a problem carried around in our American schools. But left in the classroom as a tool, likely no problem. (I used linoleum cutters in school - wickedly dangerous things - but they didn't leave the classroom and were put away after use.)
I don't know about the US, but here in Canada, no one will care :p I always had to carry one as I was studying arts, and nobody ever asked me anything about it, wheter they knew I was studying art or not : p
They are definitely not allowed in Seattle area schools. But like mentioned above for a specific craft class certain tools like a linoleum cutter are for use only in class and stay in the classroom.
I don't think that these are allowed to be brought to school in Japan either, especially at Elementary School.

I've seen these in Japanese stationery shops here in the US, but they don't really sell them at other stores. I doubt you'd see anything like this in schools. Maybe an X-Acto knife for an art class, but it would have to be high school kids, definitely not younger.
I think the fear is that kids will hurt themselves, and/or that the school would be held responsible. Though I'm even nervous to use blades like this myself. ;)

I think using them or some other knife/tool in a classroom and leaving them there makes sense.
My student said her teacher asked her to bring it to school. I'm going to ask a few others about it.....have a feeling they are ok.
Not sure...but I don't think they would be allowed in US schools. Here in Saipan it was a normal thing in the school I was working in. We used them for projects.
This is totally normal for school children here in Australia too. In fact my father carries around one in his pocket everyday as a sort of all purpose emergency tool. Fixes glasses hinge and everything!
Oh no. Here in the US, it is very frowned upon if a student had a box cutter on them like that. Too many people afraid of possible violent outcomes during school when it comes to things like that. :\
Oh NO WAY, they would FREAK if a kid brought that to school in the US!! I don't think they can even take a butter knife for their lunch!
I always use to bring those kind of things to school... for the crafts class! I'm from Spain. I think that that kind of paranoia is only in the states...
Malaysian kids do bring cutter to school at times for art and crafts. We do have gangster in the secondary schools but cutter is not ban.
