It was the size of a small child.....!!!

UGH! I can feel summer coming. I can also "see" summer coming! By that I mean insects....lots of insects. The title of today's blog is a slight exaggeration.....ok....I was at work and walked into the bathroom and on the wall was a spider bigger than my hand (and thick and not like a normal Canadian spider)....I kid you not! I froze...backed out quietly and got my boss. He is the designated bug killer or at least, remover. Even he was freaked by the size of this one. There was no killing this thing (btw-they don't kill spiders in this country and they get upset with me when I do...people happily have them in their house as they eat other bugs etc but my view is if it is in my house it will die) because it would have been like killing an animal. So I'm holding the bathroom door open and he has a mop and he basically pushes it out the bathroom window. UGH!!

When I came to Japan it was in July and it was the first time I saw a cockroach...in fact I saw 6 of them in my apartment my first night. Needless to say, I didn't sleep well that night. I couldn't kill them since I was beyond freaked so the teacher I was replacing, killed them. Thing is, I grew up with the idea that cockroaches equal a dirty house or a Vancouver alley (the only place I'd ever seen them in Canada). But this is Asia and it is normal. Thankfully I only get them about 3 -5 times a year and I'm now a pro at killing them. My 6ft 5 inch honey can't kill them so it is up to me.

Ok...I might have grossed you all out so I will stop!

ugh, i hate spiders! i kill them if they're inside my house (melissa = bad buddhist in this respect), but if they're not on my property, i leave them alone. i try to, anyway, because they are, after all, living things. but UGH they scare me!

I hate big bugs. Especially spiders. Does all of Japan get those big bugs? Or is it only certain areas.

Hey Melissa-You would freak if you saw the ones here!! Every summer I walk around the 2nd floor (where I live) of my apartment building and remove all the spider webs cause I do not want to walk into them.

Shari-I don't know about Hokkaido but I think a lot of Japan does get them! UGH!

Ah yes, the worst thing about Kyushu- the gigantic creepy crawlies! I prefer spiders to mukade!

Hi Medea....I agree to a point. Mukade are pretty gross...found a big one in my office not long ago...ugh!! But that spider in the bathroom....you could hear it hit the floor it was so heavy (before my boss pushed it out the window)....kimoi!!! (gross!)

Cockroach in the house ≠ dirty house in Asia. It's just the weather here is more suitable for breeding. We have pest control to come spray the entire house every 2 months.

Hey Tracy...I had many people tell me that when I first arrived. AS for spraying...we only get 3 or 4 a year so we don't spray.

Eeep! What amazed me is that I have a bug catcher that I bought which catches bugs without hurting and allows you to get rid of them. There are even fancier ones than mine that have a suction mechanism... yet in the country that is known for gadgets and technology... they push them out with a mop?

I've had a few spiders like that even in the UK (3 were in my *bed* - separate occasions though). One time I knew there was a spider because I heard it's footsteps it was so huge. *shudder*
